Thumbnail pictures are only 1x1 px

Q: If I create a new product and add a featured picture (default), the thumbnail picture will be shown as a GIF file (1x1 px) instead of a PNG in the original size. If I directly open the URL of the thumbnail picture, it will be shown correctly.
