Removing Shipping Adress and required Fields in an update save manner

Hi there,
since I only sell downloadable products I want to get rid of the shipping adress (or the whole shipping functionality). I also want to remove the "required" from several fields such as Adress etc. because if someone buys a download product he might not want to add his adress.

Is there an update safe way to do that? Of course I can edit checkout_class.php but I guess that´s not a very good idea when it comes to updates.

    Sorry forget the question concerning the shipping adress...found it in the settings ;-)

    But still want to know about the required fields.
